In the first game, Aya reluctantly agreed to go to an opera show with a suitor one night; even though the guy is pretty handsome and that Aya picked the opera show herself. She had a "bad" feeling about it. During the show, one of the performers, Melissa Pearce had a transformation into a powerful being known as "Eve". After the transformation, she started combusting (setting on fire) everybody in the theater. Aya was unaffected by this as her own mitochondria were fighting off Eve's mitochondria from taking over her body.

Here is a shrine to my favorite female character of all time: Miss Aya Brea of Parasite Eve. Yes, she is not real, but if she was, she would kick j00r 4$$. She's 25 years old (in the first game). She's a Lt. in a NYPD. She's very independent and intelligent. She can use almost any weapon she finds in her adventures: from a p228, to an MP5, to even a military rocket launcher. Her mother and sister died in a car accident when she was at a young age. They do not mention the whereabouts of her father in the game.
Here are some pictures:

As a result, Aya gains "parasite" powers from her mitochondria which allows her to do battle with "Eve"... Eve attempts to give birth to the 'ultimate' being which would allow for mitochondria take over everybody's cells, thus ending once and for all, 'nucleic' domination. Aya faces off with Eve and the 'ultimate' being as the final bosses of the game.
In the second game, after Aya defeats Eve and the ultimate being, she quits the NYPD and gets recruited into the FBI, into a new division known as "MIST". Mitochondrion Investigation and Suppression Team, aka MIST, is shrouded with secrecy in order to prevent mass panic. It was created to deal with Neo Mitochondrion Creatures, aka 'NMC's. In this game, Aya travels across the US in mission assignments, removing the NMCs before they can harm anybody.
